    DJ Phat Albert

    The History of my Sets

Back in August of 2000 a group of my friends wanted to hear what I could do. So I went to one of there houses and played a set of everything I had at the time. Using a VCR I recorded the whole 2 hours of the prefromance. I took the audio from that and edited it down so it would fit on a CD. First Time Around was the result. I distributed this first set to all my interested friend including the ones who attended. I heard lots of good things about, and I was very pleased how it turned out considering at recorded it live.

At the end of summer I went to Ontario to attend the University of Waterloo. There I continued to do some spinning. I had no writing desk, only decks. When I felt energized and had some spare time I would spin. Over the four months I created a new set--Set 2. I waited till the end of final Exams to record it. I got a friend computer to try to get higher recording quality. Time was limited though and various things did not work out well. I has line issues as well as sampling rate problems. I was very unhappy with the recorded result. Only one person has ever gotten a copy of that CD, and I couldn't reproduce that CD exactly anymore so it is unique.

When on my work term back in Manitoba I thought I really should try to get to spin once in Manitoba before I leave. In order to do this I would need a high quality mix CD to use to promote myself. I set to work at creating a new set. I was really the thrid set since the second one never really excited so I made a little compromise and came up with Set^2(set squared). I spent the first month of the year 2001 coming up with the right blend of beats. By the end of Feburary I was ready to record it. Over one weekend I wanted to record it several times and pick out the best parts to make the best quality mix CD I could. Do to Cakewalk acting up, and other bad luck I only got the record the set a total of 1.5 times. But out of that came enough to make a quality piece. It was enough to make me happy. So I created the cover art and am presently distrubing the CD. If you like a copy please send me a e-mail me.

    My Setup

For mixing this set I utilized my computer more. Using my on board sound card and my DMANN 2044 at the same time I was able to use two Winamps seperately--both controled by pitchfork. My other source was my Technics SL-1200mk2 Turntable. I mixed with my PMC-15mkII mixer. Recorded with Cakewalk. Post produced with Cakewalk as well.
