note: very new project

An Idea

I tend to have idea every so often. Now this idea I don't believe is very new, and infact it may already exist, but just incase it doesn't I thought I would consider developing it, and would put as a long term goal for the group (only a suggestion). Basically if you look at MIDI synthesis there are many options. Most cheep sound card have some stander set of sounds for the gernal MIDI instruments. They tend to very cheesy and not very useful. Creative's solution to this problem is called sound fonts. In the case of sound fonts as I understand it a set of new sound are loaded into the hardware synth on the creative card (and only the creative cards). This is basic like mod file (file that have the wav data for the notes with in file) but still using MIDI to activate the notes and of course the MIDI hardware synth. My problem with this system is (i assume) the files are loaded on to the sound card's memory instead of using my copius amount of memory in my system. Why have a hardware synth at all I asked. So why not develop a good software synth that can take a defined set of MIDI sounds via the system alreading in existence like Sound Fonts or DLS, and the others.

This would be quite a large project relaying on a lot of knowledge I don't have yet, but I'm always willing to learn. If are interesting in helping out with something like this please feel to join the group. If you now of a good system based on this idea that exist please tell me.
