Albert O’Connor for Math Senator

Who is Albert O’Connor?

am in 3rd year Computer Science. I have experience representing Math students from being President of the Math Society, Federation of Students Councillor, and Federation of Students Director. I value the voice of students, and want to do my best to represent you.

What is Senate?

Senate and the Board of Governors have ultimate say over the University. All the groups that decisions made about the operations of this University are accountable to Senate or Board of Governors directly or indirectly. Senate is composed of Administrators, Faculty, students, alumni, and members from Board of Governors. If you want the details check out http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infosec/uwact/uwactsen.htm for the part of the University of Waterloo Act 1972 that describes Senate.

From day to day the Senate specifically deals with changes in the academic landscape. They set the policies that effect you. Most of the decisions about your courses are made at the department or school and faculty level, but they must also be passed through Senate. Policies that affect the entire University are more carefully considered by Senate, like raising admission standards and cheating policy. Senate in fact is the body which gives you your degree.

Qualifications

I am committed to quality representation. As President of the Math Society I maintained a website publicly describing my activities, and kept it as up to date as I could. This is far more than any President has done before or since. I will create a website with information about the issues Senate is addressing, and continue with the senate-consult mailing list.

I learn quickly in new roles. I have moved from being new to the Federation of Students last summer, to having the Council appoint me to Board of Directors this winter. Over that time I was able to learn quickly how FedS meetings work, how to best represent students, and the importance of transparent decision making. I look forward to learning similar lesson in Senate, and doing my best to represent you.

I have experience in dealing with high level decision makers at this University, and will not be intimidated by working with any member of Senate. I also believe the student voice is important in high-level decision making at this University and will make sure the voice of math students is presented in the most effective way.
